Teaching History by Seeing, Hearing, and Touching History!
Looking for a great field trip opportunity for your students that is both educational and fun? Then I would like to tell you about the brand new Lincoln Heritage Museum. You are in for a treat. The Museum recently opened its doors in a new facility with design elements that you would expect only in a big city museum. The first floor exhibit area showcases more than one hundred rare and original historic pieces relating to Lincoln and the Civil War, complete with stimulating visuals and story-telling which complement the pieces and provide historical context. Upstairs through object reproductions, attractive graphics, and realistic 19th-century room recreations, students can engage with history, and feel like they are stepping into the past.
In concert with our mission to be an academic resource for students from elementary school through college, the museum can tailor its visitor offerings to meet the needs of your students. We offer guided tours, living history, up-close views of artifacts, nineteenth-century games, and more. We leap beyond the purpose of most museums you will ever find by inspiring students to transform their lives. Using examples from the life of Abraham Lincoln and character traits that he developed—including leadership, vision, perseverance, intellect, honesty, and empathy—we challenge students to examine their own lives and search for ways to exercise their same character qualities so to create their own legacy.
We encourage schools to use our museum to facilitate the learning in the classroom. Museum staff has initiated a program called the T.E.A.M. project (Teaching Enrichment At the Museum). This includes a multi-age and multi-disciplinary educational experience in which the museum staff both invites students into the museum to use it as an educational resource; but additionally, T.E.A.M. serves as an outreach to area schools after the visit if desired. In the museum, we offer first-person storytelling, slide presentations, story time, scavenger hunts, and hands-on examination of certain collections, depending on the age. Call the museum for full details of how the museum can benefit your school, your classroom, and your students.
No wonder that the Lincoln Heritage Museum was named as “one of the 30 most amazing university museums in the world.” And for the low cost of just $3.00 per student, we remain far below the cost of other comparable high quality sites! And it is right in your own backyard!
